The last Thursday of July closes out McLean Community Center's free concerts at the Central Park amphitheater, a run that brings live music to the park every Thursday evening from June 18 to July 30 at 7 p.m. For years that was the end of the summer social schedule for a lot of people in 22101. Bring a blanket, hear a band, go home, wait for fall.
That gap is smaller than it used to be. Four new food anchors opened within a nine-month window on a single stretch of Old Dominion Drive, a Tysons Galleria kitchen brought in a James Beard finalist, and the Capital One Hall calendar leans harder into August than it did two summers ago. A resident who wants a full August weekend without driving out of town finally has one.
The Old Dominion spine did the work
Old Dominion Drive used to be a corridor people crossed on the way to somewhere else. Between December 2025 and spring 2026 it became the reason to stop.
- Town, a new American neighborhood bistro, opened December 13, 2025 at 6671 Old Dominion Dr., built as a community gathering place in the heart of downtown McLean. It sits at the corner of Old Dominion Drive and Lowell Avenue, and the owner is a longtime McLean resident who previously operated restaurants in Tysons, including Greenhouse Bistro. The site is the old Café Oggi space, a McLean institution that operated for more than 30 years and closed in early 2022, leaving a void on Old Dominion Drive. Inside: a 20-seat bar, an outdoor patio that can host 35 guests, and roughly 100 seats indoors.
- Sweetgreen opened at 6220 Old Dominion in Chesterbrook Shopping Center. Original date was November 11; after a delay of several weeks, the restaurant officially opened on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. The 2,571-square-foot storefront replaced the old BB&T branch and became Sweetgreen's 13th Northern Virginia location.
- Surfside is next door at 6218 Old Dominion. The DC-founded taco stand chose McLean for its first Virginia location, planned for spring, after 15 years as a DC fast-casual fixture.
- The shopping center itself is mid-renovation. Chesterbrook's ongoing work includes architectural enhancements, refreshed storefronts, upgraded landscaping with indigenous plants, decorative lighting, widened sidewalks and outdoor amenity spaces.
Three tenants, one block, one bank redevelopment. That is not the usual pace of turnover for this stretch, and it is what makes an August Saturday feel different than it did in August 2024.
The Tysons Galleria kitchen worth the elevator ride
If Old Dominion is where the neighborhood spine reopened, the more surprising addition sits three floors up at Tysons Galleria. Chao Ban opened in April 2026 on the 3rd Floor at 2001 International Dr. by James Beard Award finalist Chef Kevin Tien of Moon Rabbit, a Vietnamese street food concept blending Southeast Asian flavors with familiar American formats. The name is not incidental: "Chao Ban" means "hello, friend."
Tien's arrival matters because Tysons Galleria's food program has historically been mall-scale rather than chef-driven. A Moon Rabbit alum booking a permanent room upstairs is the sort of thing that changes what a Saturday lunch inside the mall means for people who otherwise would never think to eat there.
Capital One Hall's August is not filler
The hall books harder in late summer than the marketing usually communicates. Here is the August slate on the calendar as of publication, with door times where listed:

September holds up too, with Blackberry Smoke's 25th Anniversary Tour on September 5, Kenny G on September 22, and John Crist on September 26. Parking is not a mystery either. General parking is $15 in the Visitor and Associate Parking Garage at 1680 Capital One Drive South; premium parking is $45 in the Hotel/Event Garage at 1625 Capital One Drive North, which connects directly to the hall.
The weekend that stitches the whole thing together
Circle September 19 and 20. Capital One Center's second annual Celebration of the Arts is an outdoor, multi-block festival taking place September 19 and 20 at 1820 Capital One Drive South, Tysons, VA 22102, 12PM to 6PM. Free outdoor programming at that scale is uncommon for McLean's side of the Beltway. If the July 30 amphitheater concert felt like a summer bookend, this is the fall bookend on the opposite corner of the neighborhood, and it happens to fall the same week Kenny G plays across the plaza.
Filling the Thursday-night gap
The Thursday concert series is not the only free rhythm in town, but the substitutions are worth naming because most residents do not have them mapped.
Tysons Corner Center is running two overlapping series through fall: The Flying Ivories Dueling Pianos on PenFed Plaza now through August 27, 2026, and Family Movie Night on PenFed Plaza August 14 with the outdoor screening series continuing through October 16.
The same plaza also hosts an immersive LEGO installation crafted by the Northern Virginia LEGO Users Group in honor of Fairfax County's 250th anniversary, running now through October 16, 2026.
The rest of the low-effort options are the ones locals already half-know but rarely stack:
- Starr Hill Biergarten hosts live shows Tuesday through Sunday every week inside The Perch.
- Shipgarten at 7581 Colshire runs weekend programming through the end of the summer.
- The Salsa Room Tysons keeps a Saturday-night dance calendar for anyone chasing a specific genre.
None of this replaces the amphitheater on a folding chair. It does mean that "we missed the last concert" is no longer a reason to write off the rest of August.
A Saturday you can actually walk
Here is the itinerary a resident can build without moving a car twice. Not a suggestion, a stress-test of whether the pieces fit.
- Start at Sweetgreen or the Chesterbrook Shopping Center bench around 11 a.m. Look east up Old Dominion. That corner used to be a bank.
- Walk two blocks to the corner of Old Dominion and Lowell. Lunch or an early cocktail at Town. The kitchen is known for seasonal menus and its bread pudding, and the patio was built for exactly this weather.
- Drive or ride to Tysons Galleria. Ride the escalators to the third floor for a mid-afternoon snack at Chao Ban. This is the tasting portion, not the meal.
- Cross to Capital One Center for whatever is on the plaza that afternoon. If it is a Culinary Week day, the Capital One Center partnership with World Central Kitchen runs the last week of July with large events and private classes led by acclaimed chefs and mixologists. If it is late August, aim for Gary Allan on the 22nd or Mariachi Vargas on the 23rd at the hall.
- If it is a Sunday, end at Lost Dog Cafe McLean at 1690 Anderson Rd, which hosts Barks & Brews on the second Sunday afternoon of the summer months.
Five stops. Two miles of actual pavement. Zero of them existed in this form the last time you probably built a McLean Saturday from scratch.
Why any of this belongs on a real estate blog
Because the texture of a neighborhood is what people actually buy, and the texture in McLean shifted in one calendar year. The Old Dominion corridor went from a stretch you drove through to a stretch that anchors a weekend. The Tysons flank added a chef-driven Vietnamese kitchen the region will talk about for a while. The paid-venue side started holding its own August slate. A homeowner deciding whether to stay put and renovate, or a family in Great Falls quietly watching listings inside 22101, is making that decision against a very different downtown than the one that existed 18 months ago.
